Definition
A method of approximating a nonlinear system near an equilibrium point by expanding nonlinear terms in a Taylor series and discarding higher-order terms. In this paper, the relative motion equations under the CR3BP are linearized assuming the inter-spacecraft distance is much smaller than each spacecraft's distance to the primaries. Linearization is a prerequisite for controller design but is valid only for small relative separations.
Application Value
This concept plays an important role in trajectory optimization and mission planning applications.
