Definition
A region on the lunar surface where direct-ascent transfer trajectories do not exist. Penzo (1961) found such a region near lunar longitude 270 deg. This study shows the region shifts with Jacobi constant and becomes less distinct when solar perturbations are included.
Application Value
The Restricted Region plays a significant role in cislunar space mission design, analysis, and control. In orbital design, it can be leveraged for transfer trajectory optimization; in navigation and control, it improves mission execution precision and reliability; in system analysis, it facilitates deeper understanding of complex multi-body dynamical behavior, guiding mission planning and risk assessment.
