Definition
A propulsion method characterized by low thrust but long operating duration. Compared with chemical propulsion, low-thrust propulsion offers higher specific impulse and better fuel efficiency but requires very long continuous operation to complete orbital transfers, suitable for the final transfer phase of deep-space missions or long-term orbit maintenance.
Application Value
This concept plays a key role in trajectory transfer design, helping evaluate transfer costs and flight time to provide quantitative basis for mission trade studies. Combined with global search algorithms, multiple solution families and Pareto frontiers can be identified to guide orbital design decisions.
