Definition
A low-energy transfer method that uses the out-of-plane velocity component generated by a close lunar flyby to provide orbital plane inclination change, instead of relying on the departure impulse. In DRO-to-Earth low-energy transfers, the out-of-plane component of the departure impulse can be as low as 5 m/s, while the close flyby provides over 200 m/s of z-direction velocity change. This makes the low-energy transfer cost nearly independent of target orbit inclination, whereas direct transfer cost increases significantly due to the larger out-of-plane impulse.
