Tangential Thrust

Definition
A thrust mode where the thrust direction is always parallel to the velocity vector (i.e., along the trajectory tangent). The analytical derivation of exponential sinusoids assumes tangential thrust (α = γ), under which thrust magnitude and polar angle rate are uniquely determined by shape parameters. It is the simplest thrust direction assumption; actual low-thrust engines typically require thrust direction optimization within an optimal control framework.
Application Value
In a linear quadratic optimal control framework, selecting appropriate weight matrices Q and R achieves a balance between tracking accuracy and control energy consumption, making it suitable for real-time control in cislunar orbit keeping.
