Definition
Conley's term for the 'neck' region near a collinear Lagrange point where the Hill's region develops a narrow connecting passage when the Jacobi constant is slightly above the critical value. Orbital dynamics in this region are accurately described by the linearized equations; by Moser's generalization of Lyapunov's theorem, all qualitative results carry over to the full nonlinear equations. The equilibrium region is the central geometric object in Conley's orbit classification theory.
