Definition
A technology where multiple spacecraft fly cooperatively in a specific spatial configuration. Compared to a single large spacecraft, formation flying offers lower manufacturing difficulty, shorter project cycles, controllable costs, and flexible reconfiguration. It enables deep-space orbital missions difficult for monolithic spacecraft. Near libration points, formation flying can be combined with periodic orbits for space observation and communication relay.
