Definition
In the rotating frame of the CR3BP, the scalar function U = G(m_E/r_E + m_M/r_M) + ω²(x² + y²)/2 that describes the combined effect of gravitational and centrifugal forces on a spacecraft. The gradient of U gives the effective acceleration: the first term is the Newtonian gravitational potential of the two primaries, and the second is the centrifugal potential introduced by the rotating frame. The zero-velocity surfaces (Hill surfaces) of the potential function determine the accessible region for a spacecraft at a given energy level.
