Definition
A system of equations containing both differential equations and algebraic constraints. In optimal control formulations, the equations of motion form the differential part while position continuity and terminal constraints form the algebraic part. DAE systems are classified by index: index-zero systems reduce to ODEs, while semi-explicit index-two DAEs require specialized numerical methods.
