Definition
The launch azimuth is the angle between the projection of the rocket's launch direction on the horizontal plane and true north. It is the primary control variable in powered-phase trajectory design and is also known as the aim point parameter. The launch azimuth determines the flight plane direction of the rocket and directly affects the orbital inclination of the injected orbit.

Relationship with Orbital Inclination
There exists a constraint between the launch azimuth and the orbital inclination of the injected orbit. For a rocket launched from latitude :
Therefore, given a target orbital inclination, the launch azimuth cannot be chosen arbitrarily and must satisfy the above geometric constraint.

Design Method
The launch azimuth is determined through iterative design:
- Provide an initial estimate of the launch azimuth
- Integrate the dynamics equations combined with the flight program angle
- Calculate terminal impact point deviation or orbit insertion parameter deviation
- Correct the launch azimuth using Newton's iteration method
- Repeat until terminal constraints are satisfied
For ballistic missiles, the launch azimuth is determined by the geographic coordinates of the launch point and target point. For launch vehicles, the launch azimuth is jointly determined by the target orbital inclination and the launch site latitude.
Constraint Conditions
The launch azimuth design must also consider:
- Launch site safety corridors (avoiding flight over densely populated areas)
- Stage separation debris impact zone constraints
- Tracking, telemetry, and command station coverage
Application Value
The launch azimuth is a fundamental parameter for trajectory design of ballistic missiles and launch vehicles. For ballistic missiles, it directly determines the firing direction; for launch vehicles, it determines the spatial orientation of the injected orbit. In constellation deployment and Sun-synchronous orbit launches, the selection of launch azimuth must also consider the right ascension of the ascending node requirements.
