Definition
The Geocentric Inertial Frame (ECI) is a reference coordinate system with its origin at the Earth's center of mass and coordinate axes pointing toward fixed directions in inertial space. It is also known as the Conventional Inertial System (CIS) or the mean equator and equinox of a standard epoch. The ECI is the standard inertial reference frame for describing Earth satellite orbits, ballistic missile trajectories, and spacecraft motion.

The most widely used ECI is the J2000.0 Geocentric Inertial Frame, defined as:

Trend Toward ICRS
The celestial coordinate system is gradually transitioning from the J2000.0 conventional celestial system to the International Celestial Reference System (ICRS). The ICRS is defined by extragalactic radio sources and is independent of epoch, offering higher precision. It is the preferred system for future aerospace engineering. However, the J2000.0 frame is easier to understand and will continue to be used alongside ICRS for a considerable time. The systematic difference between J2000.0 and ICRS is on the order of tens of milliarcseconds and can be corrected through a transformation matrix.
Application Value
The geocentric inertial frame is the fundamental reference frame for orbital mechanics and ballistic computation. In the ECI, Newton's laws of motion and the law of universal gravitation can be applied directly without introducing inertial force corrections. Orbital elements of Earth satellites, ballistic missile trajectories, and spacecraft rendezvous and docking are all described in the ECI. For cislunar missions, the ECI serves as the bridge connecting Earth and lunar reference frames.
