CME Triggers G3 Geomagnetic Storm: Northern Lights May Reach Illinois on June 8

Summary: A coronal mass ejection (CME) that erupted from the sun on June 6 is racing toward Earth and is forecast to arrive early to midday GMT on June 8. NOAA's Space Weather Prediction Center has issued a G3 (strong) geomagnetic storm watch for June 8 and a G2 (moderate) watch for June 9. If the G3 storm materializes, aurora displays could become visible as far south as the northern United States, including Illinois and Oregon.

Event Details

The CME erupted from the sun on June 6 and is expected to arrive at Earth on June 8. Forecasters from NOAA's Space Weather Prediction Center and the UK Met Office predict the impact could spark minor to moderate (G1 to G2) geomagnetic storm conditions initially, possibly ramping up to strong (G3) levels later in the day.

The strongest storm conditions are currently expected between 11 a.m. and 2 p.m. EDT (1500-1800 GMT) on June 8. While a daytime peak is far from ideal for North American aurora chasers, NOAA forecasts geomagnetic activity to remain elevated through the evening, with G2 conditions possibly persisting into June 9.

According to NOAA's geomagnetic storm scale, G3 conditions could push aurora visibility as far south as approximately 45 degrees north latitude — encompassing states like Illinois and Oregon.

Viewing Tips

Even during strong geomagnetic storms, aurora visibility is never guaranteed. Cloud cover, local light pollution, and the orientation of the CME's magnetic field upon arrival all influence the display. For the best chance of seeing the northern lights, observers should head to a dark location with a clear view of the northern horizon and allow time for their eyes to adjust. Smartphone cameras can often reveal colors and structures invisible to the naked eye during weaker displays.
