Definition
Changeite-Mg (Magnesium Changeite) is one of the two new lunar minerals discovered from Chang'e-5 lunar sample research, announced by the China National Space Administration (CNSA) on April 24, 2026 (the other being Changeite-Ce). As the third new mineral identified from Chang'e-5 samples, it enriches the lunar mineral database and provides new research objects for planetary mineralogy.
Crystal Characteristics
Changeite-Mg belongs to the calcium rare-earth phosphate mineral family, sharing the same mineral category with previously discovered Changeite. However, Changeite-Mg is notably richer in magnesium and rare earth elements. Key features:
- Crystal habit: Columnar crystals
- Grain size: Only 2 to 30 micrometers, approximately 1/30 to 1/3 of human hair diameter
- Occurrence: Primarily found in lunar basaltic rock fragments from drilling samples
Scientific Significance
The discovery of Changeite-Mg holds the following scientific value:
- Enriches the lunar mineral database: As the third new mineral discovered from lunar samples (following Changeite and Changeite-Ce), it provides entirely new research subjects for lunar studies
- Reveals lunar evolution information: Changeite-Mg records different stages of lunar evolution, helping scientists better understand the Moon's formation and evolutionary history
- Advances planetary mineralogy: This discovery propels China's planetary mineralogy research to a deeper level
- Resource development foundation: Researchers will continue studying new material compositions in lunar regolith samples to provide scientific basis for future lunar resource exploration and utilization
