Definition
Changeite-Ce (Cerium Changeite) is one of the two new lunar minerals discovered from Chang'e-5 lunar sample research, announced by the China National Space Administration (CNSA) on April 24, 2026 (the other being Changeite-Mg). As the third new mineral identified from Chang'e-5 samples, it is notably richer in the light rare earth element cerium compared to previously discovered Changeite.
Scientific Significance
Changeite-Ce holds the following scientific value:
- Records lunar evolution stages: Changeite-Ce records different stages of lunar evolution, enabling better understanding of the Moon's formation and evolutionary history
- Reveals lunar material composition: As a phosphate mineral rich in light rare earth element cerium, it provides new constraints on lunar magma evolution and volatile migration
- Enriches lunar mineral research: Together with Changeite-Mg and previously discovered Changeite, it forms a new system for lunar mineral research
- Supports future resource development: Provides scientific basis for lunar resource assessment and future exploitation planning
Occurrence Background
Changeite-Ce belongs to the same calcium rare-earth phosphate mineral family as Changeite-Mg, but the two differ significantly in rare earth distribution:
| Mineral | Rare Earth Characteristic | Occurrence |
|---|---|---|
| Changeite-Ce | Rich in light rare earth element cerium | Lunar basaltic fragments |
| Changeite-Mg | Rich in magnesium and rare earth elements | Lunar drilling basaltic fragments |
| Changeite (original) | Calcium rare-earth phosphate | Lunar samples |
