Change-7 Lunar South Pole Mission Systems Progressing Smoothly

According to the China National Space Administration (CNSA), all major systems of the Change-7 lunar south pole exploration mission are progressing smoothly. Change-7 is a key component of Phase IV of China's Lunar Exploration Program, with the primary objective of conducting detailed surveys of the lunar south pole region, with particular focus on mapping the distribution of water ice and other resources. The mission is targeting launch around 2028.
The Change-7 probe will carry an array of advanced scientific instruments. Among them, a new-generation water molecule detector serves as one of the mission's flagship payloads, designed to perform both in-situ analysis and remote sensing of water ice within the permanently shadowed regions at the lunar south pole. The probe will also be equipped with topographic cameras, regolith analyzers, and other instruments to comprehensively collect scientific data on the terrain, mineral composition, and space environment of the lunar south pole.
The Change-7 mission architecture is reported to comprise a lander, a rover, a hopper, and a relay satellite. Notably, the hopper is designed to enter and explore the interior of permanently shadowed craters at the lunar south pole — a cutting-edge endeavor in international lunar exploration. The mission is also expected to carry international cooperative payloads from multiple countries and regions.
According to the plan, Change-7, together with the previously launched Change-6 and the forthcoming Change-8, will form the technology validation framework for the basic configuration of the China International Lunar Research Station, laying the groundwork for establishing long-term scientific facilities at the lunar south pole. Specific launch windows and mission details are pending further confirmation from CNSA.
